It may be too early for some but I’m all decked out for Christmas at home; the tree is up, the tinsel has been strung and there are more balls about the place than you can shake a stick at. I am, officially, excited. If Dave would let me I’d wear my elf costume to work.
I’ve had to buy new lights this year though. In the true festive tradition the set I bought last year, which were working perfectly fine when I removed them on twelfth night band packed them carefully away in the loft had expired in the intervening 300 odd days between now and then.
In times of yore of course Christmas trees were lit with real candles and my Grandpa once told me that he remembered it being his job as a small boy to sit beside the tree and make sure it didn’t catch fire. Perhaps he should have been deployed in Chicago in 1895 when a fire from a Christmas tree destroyed the main hospital. The fire was apparently started by Santa inadvertently, as he was placing gifts under the tree, leaning too close to a candle and catching his beard on fire (which is, I have to tell you in no way funny; so you can stop sniggering RIGHT NOW).
Goodness only knows what the first aid treatment would have been in 1895 for a beard-burn but an extract from the 1933 BMJ (British Medical Journal) on the subject reveals that when it comes to burns a darned good clean may be all that is required;
The cleansing must start with the removal of all dead and charred tissues, the excision of all loose skin raised over blisters, and the removal of grease (previously applied to prevent infection), especial attention being given to the edges of the damaged area. The whole area should then be gently but thoroughly cleansed with soap and water (applied with a sterile swab and not with a nail-brush) and finally carefully sponged over with ether, to remove all natural or applied grease in order to get a thorough coagulation. It is obvious that this treatment cannot be carried out unless the patient is rendered insensible to the pain which such a cleansing of the damaged area must entail.
I should image that from all the sherry we know Santa consumes on Christmas Eve he must have been pretty insensible to have caught his beard on fire in the first place.
Thank goodness this is not current practice!

Weeeeellllll, I am one of the 12 days befor and 12 days after brigade, If I had the decorations up this early then by Christmas day I would be fed up of them and wanting to take them down. However, My good lady is of the excitable brigade and loves the build up to Christmas.
No I don't want a return to the victorian era of finish work Christmas eve, dash around getting everything ready, have Christmas day then back in work the day after, though the thought of shoving some children up a chimney does have a bit of an appeal to it.
