The Lost Art of Scab Picking

When I was a kid I knew, instinctively, when a scab could be picked and not bleed – I remember at primary school that the boys in my class used to revel in chasing the girls round the playground with a freshly picked scab, which would be waived about like a cutlass.
I also knew how to climb a tree, whether that branch would hold my weight and the optimum timing for exiting from rope swing over the brook so as not to get wet. I also knew to say “excuse me please” and when going where my parents went, to sit still and shut up.
Now, not only does the thought of picking a scab fill me with scar filled dread and a certain amount of disgust but I no longer wish to climb a tree and those rope swings look altogether not at all safe, if you ask me.
I’ve become old. I’ve also become curmudgeonly. At least if you ask the 15 people who’ve just watched me remonstrate with a child and his Mother in the Co-Op they would say that I had.
When did it become acceptable for the adult to move out of the way of the child? Having just been barged out of the way by a budding Usain Bolt, who must have been all of 7 or 8, I was moved to say to him “You shouldn’t just barge past someone, if you want get past say excuse me please”.
To my utter dismay his Mother then said to me “Don’t speak to my child like that”.
This, as you can imagine, was like a red rag to a bull. Suffice to say I don’t think I’d better go into the Co-Op for a little while.
