I work on the free-lance security circuit and I'm looking to do a medical course which goes into more depth than the first aid at work thing. In this country thought there doesn't seem to be much available unless you are a certain standard to start with, like the off-shore courses. I am ex-military and have also done the 1st aid at work too, but not much else.

I was hoping to find an intense course that I could attend which was a minimum of 4 weeks, came with a recognized qualification and was renewable. It would also have to allow basic first aiders to attend.

Does anyone know of one in the UK. If not , what about the USA?

You can attend a course with a company called ALS, they run an Emergency Medical Technician course which leads to a BTEC National Diploma in Emergency and Immediate care which is VERY recognised! You can also do cannulation, intubation, drug administration and fluid administration. You can also do defib training and medical gases training. I think you need to ask yourself why you want to do these courses. If it is for career progression you really need to join the ambulance service, become a nurse or become a doctor (like myself). If it is for your own personal benefit, you need to look at the cost of purchasing the defib (£2400) oxygen (variable) entonox (very expensive) needles, cannula, drugs (prescription only), and you would need medical malpractice insurance (very unlikely you would get it due to your lack of training and experience). Please message me back and tell me how you get on. Kevin Fisher

In response to the last reply, the EMT course at ALS does not in itself lead to the BTEC Nat Diploma. It is merely part of a bigger web of courses and having just spoken to ALS the BTEC qualification is currently on hold until further notice.

Separately Nick, be cautious of how you spend your hard earned cash in relation to realistic requirements for these skill levels (the likelyhood of ever using them and the time/money it takes to become qualified). It is nice to get extra courses under your belt and makes for an impressive CV but competency and confidence means everything regardless of certificates particularly in our professions with the chances of litigation on the rise.

If you are ex-forces without the military medicine background then maybe the reserve forces can help you. A year with the RAMC may give you the competency and confidence you need and get you near if not up to CMT2 level.

Good Luck in your quest for a suitable course and in getting more interesting work following it.
