For those of you who are running first aid related businesses (either event cover or training) - has business increased, stayed the same or fallen in recent months?

hi. We are involved in trining within the socialcare sector. our current business has seen no drop off, indeed I have taken on some new customers. Whilst the undoubted quality of what we do is important ( we have gained new work by word of mouth!) cost matters also, and I tend to offer deals for large amounts of work, or for those who continue to use my services. we are lucky that we have never had to advertise or send mailshots etc. all my business is by word of mouth, so working hard to maintain a great image is vital.

grown a bit but then we have several government contracts as well as businesses etc

great- signed a load of new contracts last week- well know national clients ;- we now do all first aid training for new staff at Woolies and MFI, and have invested our profits in an iceland bank! yee ha FATC2008-11-27 19:40:19

Simple enough question Kevin! You state you have grown as others go out of business! Are you currently in the trade of offering event services, as you have done in the past, or have you stopped? Given you have been a busy boy recently, what opportunities have you to develop your business? A QUESTION! not having a go.

Training and ambulance work but not event work. Event work is not profitable enough to sustain a full time business as the market is over saturated and there are too many people charging pennies.
I get enquiries for event work but pass it to other people, often I will jump on board as the paramedic and they provide the EMT and ambulance. Both people win then. They get work and I get work but I don't have to operate an event business.
My "being a busy boy" has involved working at my business and building it as well as working as a subcontractor for other people.

PAS I don’t get it.
You say you are so busy yet you would take work that comes into you way. Only if
somebody else provides EMT/Ambulance you would jump in as a Paramedic.

Kevin, maybe I am missing something here, i thought you did not run the ambulances anymore? Surely you would make more money if you and a colleague ran the ambulance side? Just a thought? How much do you make from ambulance work if you pass the lead off to someone else, with you purely as paramedic? scottydog2008-12-05 21:14:46

No, I don't do event work anymore, this is not the same as not 'running ambulances'. What is so hard to understand about that? Once again scotty and dontforget jump into attack pas mode and start questioning my business and work. I fail to see how it is the business of any person what work I choose to accept or turn down or how much I charge.
This is the same as when scotty criticises anyone who makes a profit from training and then goes on to mention how he charges considerably less. This is the same as when scotty criticised me for paying first aiders £8 an hour and making a profit.
Seriously, give it a rest because it is tiresome. Both of you!
There is virtually no profit in event work so I don't actively seek it or do it. If however someone asks me if I can provide event work should I turn them away and simply say no when there is an opportunity to look after a client who is usually a very good customer.
If I deliver a training course and am asked by that client if I can cover an upcoming event should I simply say no? Or would it make more sense to subcontract the event to someone who does do event work and I simply jump on board?
Why actively chase local authorities, event organisers and nightclubs; for low paying and inconsistent work when much more profitable work is available.

Well said pas, quite agree. I'm not one of your greatest fans in that you have a tendency to angage your mouth before putting your brain in gear (almost certainly borne out of passion in what you believe) but I have to say that once you make a posting we don't have long to wait before 'the usual suspects' come to have a pop at you.
