How many first aiders do you need to cover a conference of 250 delegates all of which are first aiders?
Maybe the question should be how many security personnel do you need to hold back 249 delegates in case one delegate gets injured?

Amusing comments only please.

The phrase "physician heal thyself" springs to mind - throw them a standard dressing, if they can't sort themseleves out, must be serious....:)

Reminds me of one cold November, about 20 years ago, Rememberance Sunday. The Parade was marching past the Town Band, prior to being halted and dismissed to file into the large hall where the service was to be held.

Just as the St John Ambulance and British Red Cross contingents paralelled the band, the big bass drum player suffered a massive heart attack, fell over backwards with the drum still on his chest.

Imagine the scene, suddenly all the volunteer first aiders broke ranks and ran to his aid. Serious panic broke out as no one was able to get the drum off his chest, suddenly two St John memebers appeared with a 'furley stretcher' quite what they were going to do with it no one knew but it kept them occupied. Eventually the drum was removed and an argument developed about 'who was best' to do what. Someone phoned 999 (and got the engaged signal!) and lots of self appointed 'advisors' all gave their different advice. CPR was attempted eventually, but by then, far too late - though unlikely that it would have made any difference anyway. Everyone else just looked on, bemused, but at least the poor man died doing what he obviously enjoyed doing.

This is a true story, I was one of those headless chickens!

Looking back, it was like a scene from a carry on film - I reckon something similar would happen at the conference Dave - moral - BE CAREFUL AT THE NEXT ONE and don't go if you feel anything less than 100%!

I recently sent an e-mail to HSE asking for the rules on event cover, numbers and ratios etc. and got a full reply.

At the AMBEX show this year, with about 1000 paramedics walking around, there in the corner sat the compulsory 2 HSE FAW certificate first aiders, having a quiet day. I felt sorry for them, I don't think they even got to go and look around the stands.
