Hello Folks, I was asked today right out of the blue, "i require a free first aid course in Northampton" Apparently he / she is studying acupuncture and needs an appointed person type course (EFAW) because they require a first aid certificate before they can progress into the second year. Does anyone know of an organisation that would "sponsor" such an individual, or would allow another student to make numbers up for free or very cheap possibly? i have no idea who text me but I did say I would ask you guys, so any generous facilitators out there? cheers for looking anyway folks kevin

I am sorry but why can't they pay for it themselves? If it IS required for the job then either it should be part of the course or she has to find the money herself.
I require books for the course I am doing, I have to buy them myself, I see no difference.

You will struggle to get anywere offering EFAW for free, it is very much a commercial course. It costs money to run, to provide venues and it takes up a valuable days time. What they could do is pool the full group of students together and work out a deal with a local training provider and see how cheap they can get a deal.

well said speckles and 1staidsolutions if they are training for a career that will earn income, they need to factor in cost of getting trained!

Well i got the response I was expecting, why he / she thought it would be a click of the fingers and hey presto another freebie for them i'll never know. No problems I have offered them a solution as a course, it's up to them if they wish to take me up on it. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my thread Kev

Just remembered that in Scotland, we have the ILA which will provide £500 vouchers to students to go on courses, including EFAW/FAW and loads of other courses. They may have a similar thing in England perhaps?
For all the non-students, if you earn less than £16k per year they can give you a £200 voucher for the same courses.

I know this is an old thread but will post anyway. There are opportunities for free courses, there is big pots of European Social Fund money knocking around. I deliver for a provider who pays for my services but then claims back money per candidate (outcome) from one of these funds. Generally these free courses are aimed at those with low skills, social deprivation or the unemployed but that is not always the case. The government has pots for up-skilling the workforce so even those in employment can access free training.

I believe these "Independent Learning Accounts" are intended to enable people who are already working to update their skills, and potentially increase their income. So, if this is a full time student, or unemployed, they wouldn't be elligible for an ILA.

ILA Scotland is a Scottish Government scheme that helps you pay for learning that you can do at a time, place, pace and in a way to suit you. It’s for people who have an income of £22,000 a year or less, or who are on benefits. If you are 16 or over and living in Scotland, you could get £200 towards the cost of learning with a learner account from ILA Scotland.

Isn't it down to the individual training provider? The comment 'something for nothing' can be easily balanced with 'hard faced greedy business'. At Quercus Training Solutions we have been known to appreciate certain individuals situations and come to an agreement. Sometimes helping others can help your business ie raise profile, part of the community etc.

If she is doing the full time course at collage she should be able to get it as part of the course or as a add on for a low price (That is what the collage I worked at did for the students on full time courses) also the DWP are running EFAW courses for free if you or household are are in receipt of benefits hope this helps
