Grangeval what is your location? If near Dartford, Kent I may be able to assist with Projector.

Hi Justine,

Forgive me if I am wrong but you sound like you are out of work but are qualified in Health and Social Care sector - have you thought about a job assessing NVQ/QCF in care. Thats what I do and I don't live that far from you and know that the company I work for is after assessors in the NorthWest. Drop me an e-mail if you are interested and I will send you more info (victoria.shirt@hotmail.co.uk)

Just pop round to my office and help yourself to all my kit.

You could also have my HSE registration, insurance and customer list as well.

Whats wrong with actually running a business properly and not on the cheap. Please lets keep standards as high as possible.

Hi Marty

I thought I was the only one thinking that way

Just spent a few hours today having maintenance to the lift on one of our vehicles at their depot. Loads of these tail-lift firms, but I don't think I could see them loaning out their workshops or specialist kit or vans to a competitor. So why should first aid training be different?

Doubtless we will get flamed again, like I did for questionning why people thought it OK to give a close proximity competitor info to help them be more successful and thus potentially take work from me that I have spent years working to achieve, but I agree, I believe we have to lift the industry out of this "village hall club" mentality into a professional business arena. Until we can do that, us smaller fish will always find it hard to compete with the household names.

This is not to say I don't have sympathy with people in these nasty times; I do. But the recession and rocketing prices affects my organisation too. We had to start off purchasing the kit and stuff before we started advertising training; we had to have the vehicles and all the appropriate kit before we started offering the services we offer. Forgive me for thinking that getting the courses before the kit is a misplacement of the positioning of the cart and horse.

There's a couple of points made by Marty and Jonnac.

Helping new starters. Whether we like it or not we are for the most part competitors, I'm sure none of have an issue with offering useful general advice about the industry but offering the use of actual equipment so new starters can compete against us is something of a step too far for me. Similarly, asking what works best as a marketing tool and expecting a forum member to give you their recipe for success is optimistic in the extreme.

Starting up. As Richard quite rightly mentions, start on the cheap and that's the impression you will leave your delegates with. You should IMHO start with £7k (at least) for marketing, and all the best kit you can get together, not the minimum you can afford. First Aid Training Instructing is, on the face of it an easy industry to get started in, because it's relatively easy and on the face of it lucrative, lots of people do it.

Someone said on this forum once, if you want to make a small fortune in this business, start of with a large one. Grangevale, please don't be offended but if you're having to borrow the most basic of pieces of equipment then you may be in trouble before you start, but good luck in any event.

Paul
