We at LCM are able to provide event cover for a number of organisations. We have done a number of small music festivals and dog shows. Our first aiders are fully qualified trainers and nurses. Not all event first aid providers need to registered with the CQC, it depends what services they are providing.

The original poster states - "fully qualified nurses" That I'm afraid is a registrable activity. Hence, supplying such nurses for event cover is illegal if not registered with the cqc. Not my rules!

My understanding is that with HCP's it depends what role they are performing.

Really don't want to start ranting on but why state fully qualified nurses if they are sending them as first aiders? Im sure the cqc would take a dim view.

Just to mention another point. My understanding is that Health Professions Council will not accept a Paramedic working as a first aider. If they are working (as opposed to coming across an incident) they must have "all appropriate equipment". I believe the same is for nurses registered with NMC. Those attending the Conference last year where that woman from the CQC didn't seem to know her a from her e about regulations governing health care professionals may remember her. But she did say that if they are working in their full role, they are conducting a registerable activity.
So my understanding is that providing pure first aid only is not a registerable activity, but moving into the realms of using professionals is.

Here lies some of the problems. I have attended events were it states there must be a doctor present, so we turn up to find a uorolagist who hasn't done any truama for 15 years. When we did get something he was great at reassuring but no good as far as treatment was concerned.
Nurses are another grey area, I have done events with a nurse who does palative care hasen't done trauma in years, knows her capabilities doesn't go round with nurse badges, (but is very well known locally) she is happy to be a first aider. If she was to "act" as nurse at events the NMC would not be happy as her CPD would not show any rellevant training.
Paramedics, are the ones I do feel for, very difficult for them not to be a paramedic. I know a paramedic that used to help out at a couple of local shows (car park steward, setting up, that kind of thing) but of course as soon as there was any accident they always wanted him to attend.

You haven't been covering events in our part of the world, have you? One of the consortiums providing doctors for some of the boxing matches we cover use two urologists. One of the turns up without anything, not even gloves or a steth. He has to borrow kit off us to do the medicals "Well I usually let the ambulance staff do the medicals!"

No I haven't been working in your area JonAcc, but it is worrying in this day and age that some HCP's leave themselves vulnerable like this.
