Hi All!!



As you may be aware from my previous posts I am a school nurse and am just about to undertake my First Aid Trainer training so that I can provide all our on-site training needs (plus maybe some weekend work to earn some extra pennies!).



I am a bit of a swot and like to have good quality text books and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good cover all book. I've looked at some of the first aid books, but they seem quite general first aid 'at home' kind of books and I want something a bit more nitty-gritty.



I've also looked at some paramedic books but there are just so many of them - and the prices are quite high so I want to make sure the one I buy is going to be a good one.



My goal is to have a book that covers emergency situations plus first aid but more in depth than basic first aid books that Joe Bloggs would buy - this is more for my interest than anything else (I worked in A&E for a while so I've seen my fair share of emergencies) but I just like to know everything about everything!!

Unfortunately this was the problem I found when looking for a book years ago to use on our courses. They were either very bland because they were aimed at the mass market, or very specific (and expensive) because they are aimed at specific courses. That was why I wrote my own, and continue to update it and still use it. It's objective is an interesting and informative read, with lots of general advice that there isn't always time to cover in a course, but with specific guidance for "passing" any assessment.

From what I have seen of the market, it's still pretty much the same situation

For personal use, you could try using PHTLS for trauma and basic medicine, and PEPPS for paediatrics, as these are informative books and not too difficult to read

the VAS f/a manual is rather good and is selected by a range of trainers for first aid courses, the manual is not just aimed at home or work use, it is also aimed at all / most incidents. For example it includes emergency childbirth, cheat seals etc. 



These retail at £13.99 but some places offer bulk discounts.

Be careful of some places still selling old editions, the lastest is the 9th revised resuscitation edition.

I have today received my book and I am really happy with it. I have a couple of pupils that are really keen on first aid and would like to enter first aid competitions so I have also recommended it to them to buy - you should be on commission!!

A very good book if you can get it Is Trauma Care a book produced by the Greater Manchester Fire Brigade its not expensive and should be available on Amazon we used it for training when I was in the FB training Dept.

Hi There.



If you want some good manuals, try the ones published Jones and Bartlett Publishers for the Emergency Care and Safety Institute or for paediatrics, there is the PedFACTs (Pediatric first-Aid for Caregivers and Teachers) a course done by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Its a good paed manual cos I teach PedFACTs.
