Hi All,

Me again!

I am just looking at the FAW courses and notice that they need to be assessed by someone other than the trainer. I'm not sure how many of these courses I am going to do, but I think it likely that I will need to do at least a couple of people at the place I work.

As a freelance trainer, albeit working under an umbrella company (NUCO), how do I go about getting any candidates I put through the rigours of FAW assessed to meet HSE requirements?

Thanks muchly.

I am at a loss here.  You say that you are an FAW trainer, assessed as being competent to do so by NUCO but it is news to you that currently FAW assessments are carried out by independant assessors?  What did you tell NUCO about your experience?

Thanks for the reply....

No I am not a FAW trainer - yet!!

I am due to do my trainer training (throught Nuco) in the near future so I haven't done any of the trainer training. I don't hold a FAW certificate myself as I am an NMC registered nurse so exempt.

I have posted a number of questions as I am preparing myself and researching the area as much as possible before I take the leap into training - I obviously just assumed that my 'hypothetical' situation previous people I have spoken to on here would know that I have yet to do the trainer training.

Hi Louiseg

I suspect that many of us on the forum would be able to help you with freelance assessing skills. However I would suggest that in the first instance you contact NUCO to see if they can put in touch with other freelance instructors/assessors in your area, who they have on their books as competent to assess and that you get to know them. They may be able to offer you work reciprocally too.

Although you are an NMC registered nurse and exempt from taking the FAW, it might be sensible to do the course yourself so that you know how the format works and more importantly understand from the candidates perspective what they are doing. I too am a registered nurse but have always redone my FAW qualification as I find it useful to see how others teach the course. In all the years I have been teaching first aid I have always gained something by doing the course myself- (even if it's how not to do something!)

What part of the country are you in- maybe I could help?

Thank you so much for your reply.

I'm trying to go into this with my eyes wide open so it's useful to have all this info.

I do intend to go on an FAW myself - I would hope to go on each type of course that I hope to be able to provide - so far paeds first aid, AED. FAW next on the list. I agree it helps you not just as a trainer.

I'm based in Berkshire btw.

I've got so many questions to ask NUCO when I finally get to the training! I'm one of those annoying folk that like to know everything!!!

Thanks again

Hi Louiseg
Sorry about that- don't know what happened there, I've tried again...
