Very hit and miss. The company I work for, it depends on the manager, so some are and some aren't.

My wife works in a school and did a 4 hour refresher the other week, although we gather not all the schools in the LA are doing this.

I work for an international company, usually in their 30-40 person UK office-based low hazard environment. The designated first aider doesn't maintain the first aid kit, let alone her own skills.

My wife works for a school where one of the Governors takes a personal interest in H&S. One of their INSET (staff training) days each year is on H&S and includes a first aid refresher.

I am one of 20 designated first-aiders for a charity. Apart from the 2 HCPs and one military CMT who have annual BLS refreshers (or better) provided by their employer, I am the only first aider who voluntarily refreshes their skills annually. The other first aiders with HSE FAaW or EFAaW qualifications have them provided by their employers; they are not refreshed.

I have used dedicated 'HSE refresher', REC4 and 2-day Paediatric courses to both extend my skills and refresh/revalidate my HSE FAaW certificate. This year, I am considering moving over to the FPOS scheme because the syllabus seems to be more appropriate to what I do and the HSE FAaW certification is not much use outside the workplace. I also use this site and the AOFA conferences for 'CPD'.
