sadly I can earn more stacking shelves with no responsibilty and my employer pay NI contribution!
£7 per hour is only just above NMW after taking into account NI!

thanks anyway

Well if you think that that is a poor rate, then enjoy the well paid job you have, just to point out however in the north west, a private ambulance firm who does work for a local NHS hospital pays the minimum wage, the NHS patient transport pays just over the same in fact they have just took staff on a band 2 I think that is minimum.

So I don’t feel bad about paying £7ph for some weekend work, when I first started doing first aid I did 18yrs for nothing that’s no pay, and enjoyed it.

You have to balance what an event can afford to what you pay, along with paying for insurance, uniform, equipment, admin etc etc.

I run my small first aid team for the good of the community and to provide organisers with a good service, some traditional events have folded due to high costs.

Are you suggesting that the working class should revolt and not work for less than lets say £10/£15 per hour ??

I feel this is a very interesting subject

The only capacity I have been involved in first aid and ambulance provision at events up until now is voluntarily. As TLC says, it is weekend work, and £168 for a weekend isn't too bad. Considering I am working all weekend on events for nothing, bar my expenses, I wouldn't be complaining if someone offered me £168 to do it.

Anyhow, I don't do it for the money, and that isn't the reason I am applying to a few private firms, that's simply because I want exposure to different types of events, and more experience. I do it primarily because I enjoy it, because I feel I gain something from it.

I have some sympathy with FATC's standpoint though may have expressed it differently. If we accept that anyone applying for the position is doing so in order to put bread on the table and TLC is doing it for the same reason then I have to agree £7 per hour is not a lot indeed.

My accountant estimates that on £56 a day the net salary will be in the region of £43, or £5.30 (net) an hour. if there is no contribution towards meals (over an 8 hour shift) or transport that would need to be deducted from the first aiders bottom line. Trying to be conservative about it, a qualified first aider might clear, after incidentals about £33 a day. That might explain why you have not had much interest in your post.

I note an unskilled hod carrier in Cumbria on the job centres website today can expect £8.50 an hour

Regards

Paul

I agree, an interesting topic

If I was rude then I would say go and stack shelves then!

My service tends to attend the smaller event and does not make vast profits the majority of money goes on wages, what is left goes straight back into the business including my wage, and it is a hobby business putting a few pound into my staffs pockets- if they wanted to stack shelves or carry a hodd then that’s what they would be doing.

PS I have never had a problem getting people to work for me I was let down by the person who was going to do this event due to work commitments, also I don’t have a team in Cumbria, at my Preston event I had to turn people away.

My staff are treated with respect and support me 100% they deliver a quality service due to the motivation to help people not to make money.

I'm not suggesting for a minute your motivation is anything less than genuine and professional. What I might suggest is that if you are charging your client such a low price that means you can only afford pay your first aiders £7 an hour then you are undervaluing your contribution to the event.

I'm sure other event cover providers like Jonnac (I'm not one by the way) will tell you how charging minimal amount for medical event cover by 'hobby businesses' drives prices and standards down throughout the industry; that's certainly the case within the first aid training world.

Cheers for your comments I have had a face to face meet with Jonnac when he come over to Lancs on business along with email contact, we share a some points on quality and have respect for each other.

Due to the fact that I have always been a low paid worker myself often in stressful environments, I don’t have a pot of gold to spend at will, my business will build little by little.

However my team are extremely good first aiders who I value very highly, my customers are impressed and re-book us, not because we have flash gear but because we know what we are doing.

Maybe some of you are confusing my first aid team with an event medical team???????

Let me finish by saying that I have lost more jobs than I care to mention because the organisers state the price is too high

PS  I use this forum to find staff mould them into good first aiders and build my team into a strong vibrant unit that put some other providers in the shade.

I have 2 staff in Lancashire fighting over who wants to cover the event in Cumbria so pay seems not to be the issue,

However I would like someone from the Cumbria area this will give me a chance to build a small team in the Cumbria area. I do have a west Cumbrian contact but they are working this weekend.

So if you are thinking about it and you live in the Penrith area give me a shout, Cheers.

I’m sure its all about economics and supply and demand.

I bet half the members on here would do it if

a) They had a free weekend
b) They lived in the area

Lets put it into perspective its probably going to be an easy gig with the worst case scenario of either a mild Hypothermia or trenchfoot judging by the weather forecast.

I've noticed in the short time of being a member that people on here are quick to criticise whether its a spelling mistake or someone just asking a question in the wrong way. Constructive criticism is fine but sometimes it’s on the verge of verbal bullying. Maybe the moderators on here should be a bit more vigilant or is free speech at any cost the order of the day.

I would do it but I live 60 miles away so the travelling costs/time would rule me out
Good luck with the show mate

Thank you to all who have supported me.

I have always had 2/3 of my own staff to call on for this event and have ended up using one of them due to a lack of interest from Cumbria.

I do like to use the forum to try out new staff and build teams in areas outside Lancashire, but on this occasion it has not worked.

I think the post from JEFFK was well directed with the comment about people being quick to jump in have a poke at you,

I use the forum to get ideas and information but if I can help someone I will, I have had help from forum members and a large outfit in Manchester offer me help If I need it despite a conflict of interests, those are the people who I will work with so that we can all grow.

So have a good weekend out and about stay dry and stay safe.

Thank you for all your comments.

The event went very well with only a few minor injuries, the land owner was impressed and took my details, she has said she will recommend me to others who hold events on her land, the DJ/sound tech does a lot of outdoor festivals and also took my card and will also recommend first aid plus.

All in all a good event but for the poor public turnout due to the bad weather, mind you lots of other events cancelled over the weekend including a Madness gig. That’s British whether for you.
