The latest paper on this subject following a large study in Germany, finds that when a single rescuer is doing CPR with a BVM, the "over the head" position is most effective when compared aganst working from the casualty's side (lateral position), or alternating between the two positions:
"Conclusions In the case of a single healthcare professional using a bag-valve-mask device, the quality of over-the-head CPR is at least equivilant to lateral, and superior to alternating CPR. Because of the potential difficulties in bag-valve-mask ventilaion in the lateral position, the authors recommend over-the-head CPR " Emerg.Med J 2011;28:974-978.
I am not aware of any recent studies which suggest otherwise.

I appreciate the Casualty references...such a great show! But if CPR and first aid is learned from watching TV then everyone would be doing it wrong. In response to the positioning, I think its important to learn all the different ways CPR can be performed and which ways are the most affective.

Highly commendable that we have this number of opinions on the subject but surely we all seem to be missing the point.......... doing something is preferable to doing nothing!!! Whichever technique we adopt.
A good deliverer will always give the students/trainees the oportunity to experiment with the options within the controlled environment.

Actually CPR practice is basically for rescuing people and giving them immediate first aid in case of emergency . Especially rescue professionals are trained under CPR so that they can make effective rescue when the employees at workplaces are injured.
