i was just wondering if anyone can answer a few questions for me, especially anyone from the HSE who might be reading this.

I'm a medical doctor and am hoping to get registered as a CFR and FAW instructor. I'm going to be in Ireland for the next few months, so was wondering if I could do the courses I need over there.

In ireland they say that I should do the CFR course but I don't have to do the occupational first aid course, because I qualify for exemption. I can then do a combined 5 day instructor course, which gives me an occupational first aid instructor qualification (this is the gold standard occupational FA course in Ireland) and a CFR instructor cert, accredited by the Pre-hospital emergency care council (PHECC).

If i was certified as an instructor in ireland, what else would I have to do, if anything to be ready to go in terms of teaching in the UK?

Kind regards,

Niall

Now, I have a cold and a bit of a wooly head so some of this might not make sense.  But.....

Speaking for the mainland UK (rules are a bit different in N.I.) in order to teach statutory workplace first aid - thats HSE 1 day FAW and HSE 3 day FAW the rules as set by the HSE are clear and can be downloaded here;

http://www.hse.gov.uk/fi...d/first-aid-training.htm

These can be summarised as follows:

You say you are a medical doctor?  Well in that case as long as you are registered with the GMC that exempts you from the need to have your own FAW certificate.

You will need to have a formal training qualification - PTLLS is a good place to start but if you intend on obtaining a qualification in the Republic of Ireland make sure it is comparable with the UK QCF (Qualifications Credit Framework) via the EQF (European Qualifications Framework) for extra peace of mind.

It might also be worth double checking with the HSE to be doubly sure.

Other than that you'll need to demonstrate suitable experience and competence.

The next step - is approval from the HSE.  Now you can go to them directly - again cross refer attached link or you can become affliated to an organisation, such as the AoFA.

I am duty bound to point out, other routes to approval and although, naturally, I think the AoFA offers the best 'bang for your buck' as it were you should check each one out to make sure you pick the right fit for your organisation/working methods. So should you wish to have the backing and kudos that comes from being an approved provider with the Association of First Aiders (the UK's largest Association dedicated to the furtherance of First Aid) then I am certain we can help - please call me on 01908 610093 to find out more.

The guidance you need is in http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/web41.pdf which is available from the link Marmite provided.
Note that registration with the GMC alone is not sufficient to exempt you from the need for a valid FAW certificate; Marmite omitted to point out the condition in paragraph 11 of Appendix 1.

What about other EU countries then? How do I find out information about them in terms of their requirements and whether the UK equivalent is sufficient including the trainer requirements?
